Leadership Fundamentals program aims to build capacity in the nonprofit sector, where the recession and turnover are taking a toll.
Greensboro, NC – Rates of executive turnover in nonprofits are projected to remain high, and many boards of directors are underprepared to select new leaders, according to Daring to Lead 2011: A National Study of Nonprofit Executive Leadership. Only 17 percent of nonprofit organizations have a documented succession plan, and, with one in six nonprofit leaders 60 years of age or older, organizations are swiftly losing leadership expertise.
To strengthen the leadership pipeline in nonprofits and charitable foundations nationally, the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL) is running a special session of its Leadership Fundamentals program free of charge for a group of 50 emerging nonprofit leaders. The program, scheduled for August 31 and September 1, 2011, will take place at CCL’s global headquarters in Greensboro, N.C.
“With a high turnover rate and challenging operating climate facing the nonprofit sector, it’s critical to develop leadership skills at all levels of the organization,” says Sue Simmons, CCL’s director of advancement. “Through the Leadership Fundamentals program, emerging leaders will learn critical skills that will prepare them to drive results in the near-term and successfully manage nonprofit organizations well into the future.”
Organizations with leaders in attendance will include the American Express Foundation, Boys & Girls Club of Newark, Northwest Health Foundation, the Community Health Foundation of Western and Central New York and numerous nonprofits in North Carolina. Participants will learn how to build sustainable relationships with their peers, work more effectively through alliances and lead across boundaries inside and outside of their organizations. They will also learn techniques for influencing others and developing a greater sense of self-awareness.
“Sixty-five percent of nonprofit executives report significant levels of recession-related anxiety,” says Lynn Fick-Cooper, a CCL faculty member who is training the scholarship program. “This program will help ready employees to tackle the leadership challenges they face right now – and prepare them for future success as well.”
